Il film è stato ispirato da una storia vera accaduta all’inizio della Prima Guerra Mondiale, la sera della vigilia di Natale del 1914, in molti punti del fronte.

La vigilia nel film è vista attraverso gli occhi di quattro persone di differenti origini: un prete anglicano scozzese (Gary Lewis), un Tenente francese (Guillaume Canet), un eccezionale tenore tedesco (Benno Fürmann), ed il suo amore, una meravigliosa soprano danese e partner di canto (Diane Krüger).

Durante la notte della vigilia accade l’imprevedibile: i fucili vengono abbandonati nelle trincee per andare a incontrare il nemico dalla parte opposta, stringergli la mano, scambiarsi una sigaretta, un pezzo di cioccolato ed augurargli Buon Natale (Joyeux Noël).

I protagonisti si trovano così al centro di una inconsueta fraternizzazione tra i soldati tedeschi, inglesi e francesi.

The movie is inspired by a true story, which happened during the First World War, for Christmas Eve 1914, in many different places of the battlefront.
When war breaks out in the lull of summer 1914, it surprises and pulls millions of men in its wake.
And Christmas arrives, with it’s snow and multitude of family and army presents. But the surprise won’t come from inside the generous parcels which lie in the French, Scottish and German trenches.
That night, a momentous event will turn the destinies of 4 characters: An Anglican Scottish priest (Gary Lewis), a French lieutenant (Guillaume Canet), an exceptional German tenor (Benno Fürmann) and the a wonderful Danish soprano and singing partner he loves (Diane Krüger). During this Christmas eve, the unthinkable will happen: rifles will be left at the bottom of the trenches to go to see those opposite, shake their hands, exchange a cigarette and a piece of chocolate, wish them Merry Christmas (Joyeux Noël).

These heroes find themselves at the the center of an unprecedented fraternization between German, French, and British soldiers.
